Kenilworth Castle has returned to its former glory – thanks to the computer game Minecraft.
English Heritage commissioned experts from the popular online block building game to recreate the Warwickshire monument, which has been in ruins for over 300 years.
The association is running Minecraft workshops at two of its sites this summer so visitors can try their hand at rebuilding a famous castle in the shadow of reality.
English Heritage commissioned Blockworks, expert virtual builders, to restore the Royal Castle as part of the #LoveCastles season.
The visualization reveals what Kenilworth could have looked like when Queen Elizabeth I visited at the invitation of her suitor, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester.
First built in the 1120s, Kenilworth was a royal castle for most of its history.
But it was Robert Dudley’s improvements that had the greatest impact on the structure of the castle.
Dudley hoped to woo Elizabeth I when she visited in 1575 and spared no expense to create a lavish palace.
The eventual ruin of the castle came after it was taken by the parliamentary army during the Civil War in 1642.
It was partly destroyed in a deliberate act of sabotage.
Chief Curator of English Heritage Properties Jeremy Ashbee said: ‘Even though it remains impressive, an intact Kenilworth Castle is not that easy to visualize – there are huge gaps where the walls have been. demolished, roofs and floors stolen, and contents sold or destroyed. “
“This Minecraft model undoubtedly captures the essence of the castle that housed Elizabeth I in 1575 – towering buildings, fashionable tall Elizabethan windows, the huge lake that surrounds it, and the beautiful private garden.
“All of this will help the public imagine what the castle looked like in its heyday.”
Minecraft workshops take place at Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire on August 26th.
YouTuber Amy Lee33 will be on hand to train players in the art of building virtual castles. For more information visit http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/castles
